With blistering speed, exceptional precision, and an impressive field of view, the OptiTrack S250e motion capture camera was meticulously engineered for high-performance.
The S250e comes equipped with Ethernet connectivity, on-board processing, and some of the most advanced M12 lenses on the market. No other motion capture camera in the world offers an equivalent feature set at such a low price.

High speed and precision
The S250e is capable of capturing exceptionally fast moving objects with its global shutter imager and 250 FPS capture speed. Boasting 832 × 832 pixels of resolution, the S250e can also track markers down to sub-millimeter movements with high accuracy and precision.

Massive field of view
Unlike most motion capture cameras, the S250e features a square image sensor for expansive, 1:1 vertical and horizontal field of view. When combined with one of OptiTrack’s new 1/1.8 image circle lenses, which are specifically designed to match the camera’s imager, the S250e’s total coverage area is among the largest on the market.

Ethernet connectivity
Ethernet data transmission and Power over Ethernet provide the S250e with improved scalability and range, perfect for creating larger systems with higher camera counts and expanded capture volumes.
On-camera Aim Assist button
With a single button press, the S250e can be optimized for aiming during pre-calibration setup. Toggling the on-camera Aim Assist button brings the camera to view in your software application, sets the image type to grayscale, retracts the IR filter for additional lighting and better image clarity, and increases exposure for a brighter image. Pressing the button again after aiming will return the settings to their previous states in preparation for calibration and capture.

On-camera processing
The S250e can send a variety of pre-processed image types to the PC, resulting in more efficient motion tracking. Image processing types include:
- Object - Performs on-camera detection of marker location, size, and roundness using our most precise grayscale processing methods. Provides excellent precision with the smallest CPU footprint.
- Precision grayscale - The S250e's default processing type. Similar to Object processing, but sends selective grayscale images of markers to the PC for calculation of object data. Provides the most verbose marker information, but requires more CPU resources than Object processing.
- Segment - Like precision grayscale processing, segment mode divides processing between the camera and CPU, providing streamlined marker information for CPU-efficient marker detection. Provides a balance between precision and processing load.
- MJPEG-compressed grayscale - Full resolution grayscale frames, compressed on-camera for highly scalable scene video capabilities.
- Raw grayscale - Full resolution, uncompressed grayscale.

MJPEG compression
MJPEG compression consumes 1/10th the bandwidth of uncompressed video while still enabling real-time grayscale video at full resolution (up to 125 FPS at 832 × 832 with S250e cameras). Compact, high-quality grayscale video enables image preview with multiple cameras, simultaneously—an indispensable tool for camera aiming and focusing during rig setup and calibration.
Camera control
Access a variety of S250e settings with any of OptiTrack’s software applications for greater control over what your cameras capture and what information they report to the software for processing. Available settings include:
- Image processing type
- Frame rate
- Exposure
- Threshold
- Illumination
- Filter switching
- Status LED control
- And more...

Grayscale video access
Access MJPEG grayscale video at up to 125 FPS and transform any S250e into a high-speed scene camera. Simplify camera aiming and calibration, optimize skeleton configuration, provide live capture feedback, and improve post-capture cleanup with a variety of grayscale video options.
Calibrated scene video
Because S250e cameras can operate in grayscale mode, any of the cameras in your volume can be transformed back into a scene camera after calibration, enabling scene video that has exact position and orientation relative to the tracking volume.
Improved skeleton definition
Once scene cameras are calibrated within the volume, you can visually preview potential flaws for a higher level of accuracy. Simply compare the calibrated scene video with overlaid points to confirm that the skeleton aligns with the actor’s body segments and corresponding markers.
Real-time tracking feedback
Monitor the relationship between the actor and skeleton to confirm accurate tracking or to quickly diagnose unexpected behavior. Grayscale scene video is particularly useful during facial motion capture, offering high quality previs for feedback and presentation.
Filter Switcher technology
Toggle your camera between capturing infrared or visible light with two simple mouse clicks. Swap out your S250e's 800nm pass filter on the fly to access visible spectrum grayscale video for enhanced image quality when reference video is required.
Solenoid-driven, software controlled
S250e cameras are equipped with a solenoid that can be controlled in-software to extend or retract the infrared lens filter. OptiTrack's custom polychromatic M12 lenses are specially designed to remain in focus in both the visible and infrared spectrums.
Enhanced scene illumination
Utilize environmental lighting—including standard fluorescent lights—to illuminate your scene for brighter lighting throughout large volumes.
Improved scene video recording and live presentation
Replace high contrast, infrared lighting with natural, visible light for more balanced and visually appealing scene video—ideal for presentation-quality streaming and recording.
Interchangeable M12 lenses
The S250e can be optimized for a variety of applications with custom-designed, interchangeable M12 lenses. Choose either 5.5mm or 8mm EFL lenses to adapt your cameras to your ideal capture volume. Both lenses feature a special spring focus assist, very low distortion, and fast F#1.8 apertures for increased tracking distance. Typical applications utilize 5.5mm for maximizing camera coverage within the capture volume, and 8mm for maximizing tracking precision.
Powerful infrared illumination
S250e cameras include 96 850nm IR LEDs, for unobtrusive illumination that is nearly invisible while providing exceptional range and coverage throughout large capture volumes.
External sync in/out, Genlock, and Time Code
Synchronize S250e cameras to almost any signal or source with the eSync. Cameras can be in sync to sources such as a professional video Genlock signal, and can also be triggered to record from general purpose inputs and software commands. Use the sync output signal or trigger with a DAQ for biomechanical force plate data alignment. Highly accurate frame timing can also be achieved with SMTPE Time Code for ease in editing and logging.

OEM integration
Incorporate S250e cameras into OEM tracking or computer vision applications via the free Camera SDK.
